Halswell Junction Rd congestion fix RELIEF IS in sight for commuters at the congested roundabout of Halswell Junction and Springs Rds. A traffic signal will be installed before the roundabout on Halswell Junction Rd to combat the 2km line of traffic which builds up daily. New Zealand Transport Agency journey manager Lee Wright said people have significant delays at the roundabout during the morning peak – from 6-10am. “Some Malcolm Lyall mornings it can take more than 12min for people to travel along Springs Rd and enter the roundabout because of the constant flow of traffic travelling north-west along Halswell Junction Rd,” Ms Wright said. She said there are often lines of traffic backed up for more than 2km while people wait for a safe gap to enter the roundabout. The new signal will relieve the delay by several minutes and improve safety during the morning rush. “It is frustrating for drivers and also risky as some motorists try to enter the roundabout when it is not safe to do so,” Ms Wright said. The signal will be installed 80m before the roundabout on the Halswell side of Halswell

Junction Rd. Two sensors will also be installed – one 200m before the new traffic signals, and another on Springs Rd, 50m before the roundabout. The signal will only be used to manage traffic during the morning peak. Ms Wright said the two
sensors will ensure traffic is not stopped unnecessarily and the majority of people travelling on Halswell Junction Rd will not notice any delays. Give way rules will still apply at the roundabout, even if cars have got a green light. “The green light will give drivers permission to approach
the roundabout, but they will still need to obey the road rules and give way to oncoming traffic once they are at the roundabout,” Ms Wright said. Prebbleton resident and Selwyn Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall said he was delighted that the intersection will be improved.
“I’m pleased for our community that the transport agency is pro-actively providing a solution to what has become a frustrating intersection on our local roading network. This change will make a real difference to commuters.” The project it set to cost around $150,000.

If you don’t get away to work early, getting through the roundabout and onto the Southern Motorway means a 15min or so backlog to Prebbleton. This has been happening for a long time now and will get worse as the motorway extension work kicks up another gear. So the powers that be will install a traffic signal (see page 1) at the roundabout to combat the 2km of traffic that backs up on weekdays. Once you get to the roundabout it’s a game of dodgems getting across and around into the motorway flow. That can be exciting, or fearful, depending on what kind of person you are behind the wheel. – Barry Clarke

Mega-facility work starts next year Denton Park site for $38m facility By Julia Evans WORK ON the new $38 million mega-facility at Denton Park is scheduled to start late next year. The Hornby Library, Customer Services and South West Leisure Centre will be sited at the park after months of debate and controversy. The facility is still in the planning stage and it will go into design at the end of this year. But south-west residents shouldn’t expect to be using the facility until the middle of 2020. Although at this stage, these are only indicative dates. But sports clubs say they will fight to stop it going ahead. They have been protesting the mega-facility’s construction at Denton Park said will fight to the bitter end. A petition, started by Hornby resident Mark Peters, has received 1500 signatures – including nine from the original

City councillor Vicki Buck said there were a lot of less vocal residents in the community who supported Denton Park too. “There are a lot of other people in the south west of Christchurch that are desperate for a facility,” Cr Buck said. Those in favour included Hornby High School’s board of trustees, Canterbury Track Cycling and Community Development Network Trust. Cr Buck said not one park received a majority vote. “The interesting thing about these parks is that the majority of people are opposed to them.” She said she could not sit by and watch $10 million of ratepayer money be “buried in the ground” if Kyle Park was approved. “I am not in favour of us making a decision that takes away from the people of Hornby who for so many years have not had a pool or great facilities in their area at all,” Cr Buck said.

Supporting women to succeed
Sheila Hailstone, founder of the Christchurch Women’s Toastmasters Club, which meets weekly at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Papanui, writes about the importance of inspiring confidence in women When Annette King finally bowed out of the Labour Party after 33 years, she said it was not good enough that women only make up 31 per cent of the MPs and that all political parties need to commit to making Parliament truly a House of Representatives. It is not only in this area of leadership that women are under represented. Women make up more than 60 per cent of university graduates with a post graduate or honours degrees. However, they can only be found in 20 per cent of senior management positions and only 17 per cent of private sector boards. It’s not that women of any age lack the skills or obvious intelligence to put themselves forward for leadership positions, but they may need support and confidence to take up the challenge.

Christchurch Women’s Toastmasters, which meets weekly in Harewood Rd, has a phrase ‘supporting women to succeed’. In this club, women can gain both the speaking skills and leadership skills to take on any challenge. The group has attracted women from many walks of life and has a truly international feel as women of many different cultures find their speaking voice. The women in this club have used their skills to train business people in public speaking and
the funds gained have been used to help pay the training fees for those members on a tight budget. Members have credited the club with helping them gain work, confidence, management positions and there is even one elderly member who believed it helped them recover from a stroke. For women, it is important to not allow the noise of other’s opinions to drown out their own voice. Women should follow their hearts, and if they want to gain confidence to do so they can and should be supported by other women. The Christchurch Women’s Toastmasters is a great place to start. Then maybe in my lifetime we will see women take up 50 per cent of the seats in Parliament and 50 per cent of the places on private sector and Governmental boards.

I SEEM to spend some time every week complaining about the number of kitchen fires we’re going to. Not that we are moaning about having to go to them, but we know the inconvenience to anyone who has such a fire. People who suffer them regularly end up being treated for smoke inhalation after trying to control what happened. Last week was quite a busy one in the kitchen fire department, and a couple of the call-outs triggered messages we all should be aware of. The first was at Breezes Rd, Aranui, on Thursday and was a perfect example of the danger of leaving something combustible on a stove top. In this case, a plastic coffee grinder was cooked up because the element it was sitting on was turned on by mistake. I’ve seen bread boards, toasters and tea towels all cause a fire because an element was mistakenly activated. If you persist in storing these things on the stove top, it’s
almost inevitable that eventually the obvious will happen. They’re not storage areas. If you’re tempted to use them as such, then quite simply, don’t. The second fire was at Ferry Rd on Friday where a pot of burning oil was carried through
the house in an effort to get it outside. Inevitably it was dropped as the flames increased. A fire on the stove top should be handled right there. If it can’t, get out and shut the door. Don’t spread the fire.

STUDENTS AT Hornby High School have been giving to their community by fundraising for the Salvation Army, raising more than $5000 in cash and donating a more than equal value of canned food. The project is lead by the programme’s peer mentors, made up of senior students who organised a mufti-day. All students wearing mufti donated a can of food and a gold coin. The students chose to support the Salvation Army as they recognised the significant contribution the charity made to their community. Consequently, a very proud group of young people presented the cheque to a Salvation Army representative this week. “Giving to your community is a key component of the Stars programme delivered at the school by the Graeme Dingle Foundation,’’ says Stars coordinator Lucretia Treadgold. The programme is designed to make the transition into high school a more positive experience for year 9 students

News Superstar Adams comes to Chch By Gordon Findlater HUNDREDS OF aspiring basketball players flocked to Cowles Stadium and the Celebration Stadium to see NBA star Steven Adams. The Oklahoma City Thunder centre was joined by teammate Andre Roberson and the team’s coach Billy Donovan. Other than getting the chance to interact with the NBA star, one of the highlights of the day was being introduced to MVP Russell Westbrook who talked via facetime (video cellphone call) with Roberson. Tickets for the first ever Steven Adams Camp held in Christchurch sold out in under an hour. The camp was the first of three run around the country by Sports Pathways. The objective of the camps is to provide an opportunity for youth players to train with him and expert coaches. While in Christchurch, Adams also visited the Nga Hau E Wha National Marae. Before heading back to the United States for the upcoming NBA season, Adams will host an invitational golf tournament in Auckland. •Local sport, pages 10 and 13

Syme stars as CBHS win title By Andrew King CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High’s newest rugby star Rico Syme stole the show on Saturday, pulling off three big plays in the 18-10 win over Timaru Boys’ High in the UC Championship final. Syme slotted into first-five after playing the semi-final at fullback and, within the first half hour, repaid the coaches faith with two chip kicks to set up tries in the left and right-hand corners of Straven Rd. He said “luck of the bounce” and great support play was the reason the kicks came off. The 12-3 half-time lead was extended with another Syme penalty in the 42nd-minute before Timaru hit back with a converted try of their own from a lineout drive making the score 15-10 with 20min to play. Syme lined up a penalty in the 62nd-minute from about 45m on the angle, and the confident left boot did not fail. “I was pretty nervous when we decided to go for goal but I knew that if I hit it well, then it would have the legs,” he said. Even though Timaru needed two scoring plays to snatch victory, Syme said he knew CBHS

would have to defend hard as they were capable of coming back. CBHS held on to win their second consecutive title and 10th in 17 years since the start of the competition in 2001. Hundreds of supporters poured onto the field to celebrate with their team. “It’s so satisfying that we won, didn’t think I would be here at the start of the season especially when I was playing for the seventh XV,” Syme said.
Now they look ahead to the clash with Southland Boys’ High in the South Island final. “My goal is to focus on the Southland final and then if we win that, focus on top four,” Syme said. In the other finals, St Bede’s ran in eight tries against Marlborough Boys’ to record a 50-13 win in the bowl final, while St Thomas’ beat Waimea Combined 26-20 in the plate final.
St Thomas win plate final against Waimea in spite of yellow cards By Andrew King ST THOMAS won the plate final in the UC Championship in a hard fought 26-20 win over Waimea Combined after being reduced to 13 players for a short time. Played at their Middlepark Rd home in front of a great school crowd, St Thomas ran in four tries, three of which were converted by the boot of Cormack Tarrant. Two yellow cards, one before and one after half-time, saw St Thomas reduced to 13 men. Waimea took advantage scoring two quick tries. When back to their full 15, the home team was too much for Waimea and a knock-on in the final play of the game gave St Thomas their second plate title.

Riccarton High School Trio’s game wins competition Kayley Johnson, Kaile Qian and Georgia Walsh have won the 2017 Future Transport Competition organised by the NZ Transport Agency. For their efforts, they win $500 each, $500 shared between the supervising teachers, Ms Jermy and Ms Varcoe, and $2000 for the school. The girls created a board game, called Starpath, which won the playable game section for Years 7 to 10. It was created in their Contextual Class, 9Rd, in their
Maths and Science classes. The basis of the game is the Starpath Plus finish which illuminates footpaths in the dark. The girls investigated opportunities and challenges in transforming transport and came up with the idea of the Starpath – a safe way to complete a journey. The game is played with two to six players who roll a dice to advance but have to overcome challenges on the way, depending on what appears on the cards they
end up with. For their entry, they had to send videos and paper explanations to Wellington for judging but before they completed their task, they got the rest of the class, and then their parents, to road test their game. Japanese students visit Students from Takefu Higashi High School spent a week with us recently. The 16 students and two teachers were billeted with our students, attended classes
with their billets and saw a little of Christchurch on some excursions. Riccarton will visit Takefu in April next year continuing the visits which have taken place since 1995.

Avonhead, Upper Riccarton martial artists make NZ tae kwon do team By Andrew King
YOUNG TALENT: Mani Depree has joined the New Zealand team for the first time.
UPPER Riccarton’s Helen Caley and Avonhead’s Mani Depree have been selected for the New Zealand tae kwon do team to travel to Ireland in October. Both train out of the Pulse Taekwon-Do Casebrook gym on Veitches Rd. Caley, 33, will compete in the senior women’s individual fourth and sixth dan patterns, individual senior women’s special technique, and
senior women’s team special technique. She will look to add to the gold medal she won in 2013 in the team speciality and bronze medal for individual patterns. Depree, 15, will join the team for the first time and compete in the individual junior male under-50kg sparring. He is excited to see how he goes after all his hard work, said Angela Oliver, Pulse Taekwon-Do Casebrook head instructor.

Halswell win junior netball title By Andrew King HALSWELL SCHOOL won the junior B netball title at the Primary Sports Canterbury winter tournament on Thursday. More than 1700 pupils making up 171 teams from 87 schools across Canterbury came together to play netball, hockey, football and rugby at South Hagley and English parks. Halswell beat Paparoa Street School in the final to lift the junior netball title. Halswell coach Leigh Hurford said it was a fabulous, well organised day.
“We were thrilled that all of the hard work we put into practicing paid off and we were elated to come away with the victory.” In other results, Wharenui School were second in the senior hockey after being beaten by St Andrew’s College in the final. Christ the King School were third in the senior netball, which was won Queenspark School. All schools had to qualify through their school zone to be eligible for one of the biggest primary school sports events of the year, Primary and Canterbury AIMS sports director Lyn Miles said.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS WITH ROASTED GARLIC AND PINENUTS Ingredients 1 head Garlic 20 small Brussels sprouts 1 Tbsp Olive oil 1 Tbsp Walnut oil ½ cup Pine nuts ½ cup Currants Directions Preheat oven to 200 deg C. Remove the outer layers of
papery skin from the head of garlic. Slice just enough off the head to expose the garlic cloves, then season and wrap in tinfoil. Bake for 30min, then cool and squeeze the flesh out of the skins. Meanwhile, toss the sprouts in walnut and olive oil. Season and place in a roasting dish, cook for 15min, then add the pinenuts and currants. Return to the oven for a further 5min. Pile the sprouts, pinenuts and currants on to a serving dish, drizzle with oil leftover in the pan and top with garlic.

Tibetan monks are constructing the sacred cosmogram grain by grain with crushed marble coloured sand. It represents the world in perfect harmony, and then after completion, the mandala will be ceremoniously destroyed as a reminder of the impermanence of things.
